Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017
The forty day season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017 and ends on Holy Thursday evening. Lent is a season of preparation and penance: we prepare to renew our baptismal promises by giving ourselves over to works of penance. Receiving ashes upon our heads is a sign of penance, expresses the human condition as affected by sin. By receiving ashes we outwardly profess our guilt before God and thereby, prompted by the hope that the Lord is kind and compassionate, patient and abounding in mercy, express our desire for inward conversion (Ceremonial of Bishops, #253).
Fast and Abstinence: On Ash Wednesday (March 1st) and Good Friday (April 14th), all Catholics from the age of 18 and 59 are required to fast. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Abstinence is required for all Fridays during Lent.

Daily Mass during Lent
During the season of Lent a daily Mass at 6:30 p.m. will be added to the Mass schedule beginning Thursday, March 2, 2017.
Stations of the Cross
Every Friday during Lent, we will praying the Stations of the Cross at 7:15 p.m. (after the 6:30 p.m. Mass).
The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as the individual moves from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete. (www.catholic.org).
